The 8th Bradford Pride will take place on Saturday 1 June 2013.

The following statement was written by Bradford College’s UCU Equality Officer and with the agreement of Unison submitted to the college for their support. The college have forwarded this statement to all staff.

The 8th Bradford Pride will take place on Saturday 1 June 2013. This is going to be the highlight of Bradford LGBT community’s calendar.

Gay pride or LGBT pride is a worldwide movement and advocates that lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender individuals should be proud of their sexual orientation and their identity.  Gay pride promotes and campaigns for equal rights and benefits for LGBT people.

In recent years hate crimes against LGBT communities have been highlighted in the media and the recent tragic death of a transgender school teacher in Accrington showed that discrimination against LGBT people is still with us.

Gay pride is a day of accepting and celebrating diversity in our communities.  It also recognises the impact Gay, Lesbian and Transgender people have in the world.

We believe that promoting and campaigning for diversity and equality for all is a duty for both employers and trade unions.

The management and trade unions at Bradford College give their full support to Gay Pride in Bradford.  We congratulate the organisers and encourage staff and students to celebrate Bradford’s diversity with our LGBT communities on June 1 in Centenary Square.

Bradford College, UCU and Unison are committed to opposing all form of discrimination, harassment or bullying on the basis of sexual orientation.
